Across industry and academia, wireless network designers are converging on open and programmable cellular networks to meet the demands of exciting new applications such as video streaming and teleconferencing, virtual and augmented reality, and massive Internet-of-Things and manufacturing deployments. Moderated by Kyle Jamieson of Princeton Computer Science, this panel brought together Princeton faculty (Jennifer Rexford of Computer Science) and New Jersey innovators (Ozge Koymen of Qualcomm, Dragan Samardzija of Nokia Bell Labs) to discuss their visions of the architecture of these networks and the constituent technological advances: ranging from Softwarization, Network Function Virtualization, and slicing in the Access and Core Networks, to edge computing, New Radio, and the use of millimeter-wave spectrum in the Radio Access Network.
These innovators offered their takes on how their respective visions will translate into market impact, and the role that Princeton and nearby companies will play over the next 3-5 years in the overall 5G/NextG ecosystem of global standards bodies, corporations, and industrial alliances. They also offered their takes on the available opportunities for collaboration between industry and academic researchers, and their advice for the next generation of students interested in pursuing a path in this exciting and dynamic area.
This session was part of Engage 2021, Princeton University's 2nd annual innovation and entrepreneurship conference. The conference was live streamed December 1-2, 2021. Engage brings together researchers, innovators, entrepreneurs, industry, government and stakeholders from throughout the innovation ecosystem to catalyze the transformation of research into innovations that impact the world.
