Nature of Evidence with Emily Oster

The CST, in partnership with the Public Lectures Committee, recently welcomed Dr. Emily Oster as part of the "Nature of Evidence" public lecture series. Dr. Oster spoke about her efforts to collect data on COVID-19 rates in daycares during the lockdown, and she introduced a dashboard that tracks infection rates in K-12 schools. Dr. Oster's preliminary data collection shows that case rates in high schools reflect the case rates in their communities, while elementary schools, middle schools, and daycares have lower rates than those observed in the general population. Based on these results, Dr. Oster suggested that the benefits of in-person learning may outweigh the potential risks as long as community infection rates are low, and she stressed the need for large-scale data collection initiatives to help officials make informed public health decisions.
