The Novogratz Bridge Year Program's Voices event in March 2021 featured the academic work of Dr. Jianhua “Ayoe” Wang, assistant professor in the Department of Anthropology at Yunnan Minzu University in Kunming, China. Through careful analyses of rich oral texts, Professor Wang has traced the history of the Akha people, a Tibeto-Burman speaking group in the Upper Mekong region of Southwest China and Southeast Asia, to their original homeland Tmqlanr. In this discussion, Professor Wang shared his years of research on the Akha people’s worldview, and how their belief system informs their approach to shaping and managing their natural environments.
