We analyzed a dataset about the New York Philharmonic performance history from their first concert until present day. The data included information about topics like musical scores, soloed instruments, and performers, but we focused our research on information about geographic location. The NY Philharmonic has played in a variety of venues in different cities and countries, which sparked our interest in a geographical analysis. We saw certain venues in rural areas that surprised us, and we noticed historical locations that no longer exist, such as USSR cities. We created a visual map that pinpoints each location where the NY Philharmonic has performed. The features of the map show city, country, and coordinates. Additionally, the map visual has other functioning capacities, including dot sizes that correspond to the number of times that the NY Philharmonic has played in a specific location. The digital form of our map also has interactive features, such as the ability to rotate and zoom on specific regions. In our research, we are examining the connection between music and place. Is music limited to geographic regions, or does music transcend place?
