For many of us, social media is an integral part of our everyday lives. But the ramifications of social media can go beyond just an unfunny post or angry response; on more than one occasion, social media has led to violence and authoritarian behavior. From the January 6th insurrection at the US Capital, to the Rohingya genocide in Myanmar, unregulated social media has caused massive amounts of harm. In this video, I examine the responsibilities social media has to the greater public, and some philosophical tools that can be applied to these platforms. Although there is no simple answer, I hope that knowing about the issue of unregulated social media and the applicable moral frameworks can shine a light on a critical issue of today.
