Michèle Flournoy served as Under Secretary of Defense for Policy from 2009 – 2012, the highest-ranking civilian woman to ever serve in the Defense Department. She founded and was named President of the Center for a New American Security. She previously served as a Senior Advisor at the Center for Strategic and International Studies and as a Distinguished Research Professor at the Institute for National Strategic Studies at the National Defense University.
