The Council on Science and Technology is proudly celebrating our 35th year! The CST was founded in 1989 through a generous gift from Dr. Anthony B. Evnin in order to advance STEM literacy through the development of rigorous and engaging courses and programs, starting in the 1989-1990 academic year. David Wilkinson (PHY) (deceased) served as the CST’s inaugural director from 1989-1993, followed by Shirley M. Tilghman (MOL), 1993-2000, Neta A. Bahcall (AST), 2000-2008, Bonnie Bassler (MOL), 2008-2013, Naomi Ehrich Leonard (MAE), 2013-2023, and Maria Garlock (Interim) (CEE), 2023-Present. Throughout its 35-year history at Princeton, CST has developed hundreds of courses and programs, and conducted and facilitated significant research dedicated to ensuring that all members of the university community, regardless of their background or major, can recognize, appreciate, and apply science and engineering in their everyday lives, in their work, and in society. The annual Anthony B. Evnin Lecture, Gregory T. Pope Prize in Science Writing, the StudioLab, myriad events, courses, affiliated student organizations, and interdisciplinary collaborations attest to the enduring value of CST’s efforts to connect everyone at Princeton to STEM.
