Barbara Bodine, Diplomat-in-Residence and Lecturer in Public and International Affairs at the Woodrow Wilson School, discusses the events of the Arab Spring from her perspectives as a practitioner, scholar, and former U.S. Ambassador to Yemen. Considering the issues of revolution, reform, democracy, liberalization and Islamism in the Middle East, she describes the interplay between these issues and technology/social media, and the resulting development of a transnational consciousness in that region. Included topics are the demography, politics, economics, and fundamental social contract of the Middle East, spanning Yemen, Egypt, and Tunisia to Bahrain, Libya, Syria, and beyond.
