Karen Comins and Erika Gilfether sat down and talked about Karen’s long career as a preschool teacher at UNOW Day Nursery on the campus of Princeton University. Karen began working at UNOW in 1986 and over the years has seen the school grow and evolve from 6 classrooms (one of which would sometimes pile into a van and spend the summer traveling around central New Jersey) into the 14 classroom child care center it is today. Karen reflects on what has changed (in 2017 UNOW moved into a brand new modern facility built specifically by the University for it) and what hasn’t (UNOW has remained steadfastly play-based, child centered, resistant to the academic pressures so easily placed on early childhood, and deeply committed to its original ideals of all children and families being aware of their intrinsic worth and equality). Reflecting on what kept bringing her back after various breaks for having and raising children, Karen said “I kept coming back because people care what you think.”
